Yaz Birth Control Dangers And Lawsuits

The number of product liability lawsuits on belalf of Yaz birth control pill users are continuing to rise across the country. Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer of Yaz (or Yasmin), initially advertised that Yaz had could eliminate PMS (premenstrual syndrome), that it could be used solely to clear up acne, and that potentially serious side effects were minimized. These claims by Baxter were aired in television commercials throughout the U.S. for months. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) determined these advertisements were misleading and demanded that Bayer run new ads which restricted the marketing of Yaz for only FDA approved applications. The new advertisement also discusses the serious health problems that can result from the use of Yaz which include heart attack, stroke, and deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Of the growing lawsuits filed against Bayer, the primary allegations are that Yaz is an unreasonably dangerous drug and that Bayer misled consumers about the uses and dangers associated with the drug.

Yaz Side Effects

Yaz is considered a combined oral contraceptive which contains ethinyl estradiol (estrogen that effects the release of eggs) and drospirenone (progestin that interferes with the lining of the uterus). The chemical drospirenone used in Yaz can increase potassium levels. Although potassium is healthy in moderation, it can be dangerous in large doses and result in potentially serious side effects. These side effects can include deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, heart attack, stroke, bladder problems and sudden death. Individuals with preexisting kidney problems, liver and adrenal disease may be particularly susceptible.
